Chi Sigma Chi Remembrance Fund

By Jared Lindell

Donors start new funds at the Community Foundation for many different reasons. One common reason would be to do so in honor of a close friend, family member, or even an organization. Others like to start funds as memorials or as remembrances of people or other things close to them in their lives. One new fund at the Community Foundation that was recently established as a remembrance of a unique brotherhood is The Chi Sigma Chi Remembrance Fund.

The Nu Nu Chapter of the Chi Sigma Chi Fraternity was active at Jamestown High School (JHS) from 1926 through 1975.   The fraternity was an organization for male JHS students that provided and encouraged developmental, social, and leadership opportunities for these young men. Members of the fraternity served in officer roles, routinely organized and hosted events, such as dances, balls, and conventions, and were very active in intramural sports. Participation in all fraternity activities gave each member the opportunity to develop important like skills, from things as simple social interaction to becoming a strong leader.

As with most fraternities, the Nu Nu Chapter of Chi Sigma Chi also developed a strong camaraderie between its members. In essence, a brotherhood was created, which remains today. That brotherhood is found in “The Hourglass Club.” The Hourglass Club was formed in 2003 by members of the Nu Nu Chapter in an effort to organize the fraternity today, while revitalizing the brotherhood that existed years ago. The Hourglass Club prints a newsletter twice per year highlighting accomplishments and activities of fraternity members and their whereabouts today. The Club also holds a reunion picnic every year to bring family, friends, and members of the fraternity together on an annual basis. The Hourglass Club is all about remembering a brotherhood that was important years ago and remains so today.

As an additional way to ensure the memory of the Nu Nu Chapter of the Chi Sigma Chi remains intact forever, The Hourglass Club established The Chi Sigma Chi Remembrance Fund at the Community Foundation. In addition to serving as a remembrance of this brotherhood, the Chi Sigma Chi Fund will contribute ongoing support to worthy organizations that are providing developmental programs for the youth of Jamestown. As stated, the Chi Sigma Chi Fraternity was so important to the development of its members years ago, and the Hourglass Club felt youth today should be given the same developmental opportunities.

Over its 50 years of existence the Nu Nu Chapter of the Chi Sigma Chi Fraternity is estimated to have had a sustained membership of 20 members. However, many membership records have gone missing over the years, so the Hourglass Club has taken the ongoing task of working to discover other potential past members. If you are a member of the JHS Chi Sigma Chi Fraternity or if you know some else who might be, call 483-1700.

Youth development is a vital to the future successes of the area’s young ones. Due to the foresight of The Hourglass Club and the establishment of the Chi Sigma Chi Remembrance Fund, area youth will have one more opportunity to succeed, which can only serve to benefit the future of the community.
