In a few days, communities all across the nation will celebrate the 4th of July. This day represents many things for the country including the freedoms we love and the independence we hold. The 4th of July also demonstrates the level of patriotism that exists in communities and the people within them. This is why this special day affords us all one more opportunity to thank and remember those who have fought to provide us with the independence and the freedoms we enjoy.
There are many who serve today who fight to defend our independence and freedoms just as there were many years ago. However, just because past conflicts are now in the history books does not mean those who fought in them should be forgotten. This is why the Chautauqua County Veterans Service Agency established the Veterans Assistance Fund at the Community Foundation in 1996. The fund was created to remember those who fought for our freedoms and help them fight through struggles in their own personal lives.
The intent and purpose of the Veterans Assistance Fund, according to its bylaws, is to “assess and respond to the needs of the veterans community of Chautauqua County, to provide a vehicle whereby individuals, organizations and governments may donate funds to provide emergency assistance for County veterans and to serve as a catalyst for charitable activities that benefit County veterans.” Simply stated, the fund provides direct financial assistance to local veterans and their families in times of need, short-term emergency relief, education, and any other personal need that might arise.
Veterans that are in need or have been overcome by emergency situations should contact the Chautauqua County Veterans Service Agency. These needs could range from things such as housing costs to medical expenses to utility payments. If you are eligible for funding based on your situation, the Agency can provide a grant from the Veterans Assistance Fund to lend a helping hand.
Additionally, for those who wish to lend a helping hand of their own to veterans in need within the community, the Veterans Assistance Fund is a great place to start. Any donation, whether it is from a business, household, or other charitable organization, will help this fund to continue in its growth. What this equates to is more and more veterans served each year that have particular needs. This is the overall goal of the fund: To serve those individuals that served to protect us and our independence. If you would like to make a donation to the Veterans Assistance Fund, call the Community Foundation staff at 661-3390.
Every time you see the American Flag waving, remember what it symbolizes, and, beyond that, remember those who fought for the flag and continue to today. This 4th of July, go to the parades, watch fireworks, and celebrate with friends. However, do not just celebrate the party but celebrate the freedom and independence the 4th of July represents, and thank a veteran for his/her contributions. It is their past and current contributions that make our celebration possible.
