FYI for Future Teachers
Friday, February 06, 2009

By Rose S. Prinzi

As local seniors enter their last semester of their high school careers, they are busy with plans for their future.  Many of them are preparing to continue their education. They are visiting colleges, submitting applications, filling out FAFSA forms and discussing their futures with family and friend.

For those individuals seeking a major in education, the Southern Chautauqua County Retired Teachers’ Association offers a special scholarship through the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation.  The fund was established in 2001 by the Association as a lasting endowment to assist area students seeking teaching degrees by providing them with a financial resource. Since its inception, over thirty area students have received awards totaling over $16,000. This assistance serves as a great seed to help these students to become the next generation of teachers.

High school seniors attending Bemus Point, Cassadaga Valley, Chautauqua Lake, Clymer, Falconer, Frewsburg, Jamestown, Panama, Sherman or Southwestern Central High Schools who have plans to major in elementary or secondary education are eligible for the scholarship.

To apply for this scholarship, you will be asked to complete a 200-word essay titled, “My Reason for Entering the Field of Education.” Once completed, the application should be submitted to the student’s high school guidance department. The application is available on-line at www.crcfonline.org or can be picked up at the Foundation office at 418 Spring Street, Jamestown. The deadline for this application is March 1st.

When all applications have been received, the scholarship committee will review the submissions and make their selection for awards by April 1st. Recipients will be notified of their award and invited to attend the Association’s luncheon meeting.

The Southern Chautauqua County Retired Teachers’ Association Scholarship begins the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation scholarship application season. Many other scholarship opportunities are available at the Foundation. On-line applications will be available on March 1st  at the Foundation’s site.

To learn more about the many scholarship opportunities available at the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation, contact the staff at 661-3390 or go to the scholarship section on the Foundation’s website at www.crcfonline.org.

SPECIAL NOTE: All general scholarship applications must be submitted through our website on or by June 1st.
