Lucille B. Miller of Jamestown has been named the 1991 recipient of the Axel W. Carlson Award by the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation.

An award of $1,000 will be given to her as part of this recognition program.  She will receive the award from Mayor Donald W. Ahlstrom in a public presentation at 3 p.m. Thursday in the Municipal Building lobby.

Mrs. Miller, regarded by many as one of the area's greatest unsung heroines, works full-time for The Post-Journal.  In her spare time, she spends innumerable volunteer hours as piano accompanist for the Junior Guilders' rehearsals and performances.  She is a behind-the-scenes person who seldom gets acclaim at a production.  However, Junior Guilders officials say, they could not go on without her.

In addition, Mrs. Miller volunteers her time and talents as church organist and church choir director. She is accompanist for rehearsals and performances of Little Theatre of Jamestown and high school musicals.  She is often the accompanist to young people at solo competitions and performances.

Mrs. Miller was a member of the board of directors of the former Harbor House, and now can often be found painting in a Habitat for Humanity house.

The Axel W. Carlson Award is made in the spirit of community service exemplified by the donor of the fund, Axel Carlson.  Both the personal kindnesses and the monetary contributions made by him were done quietly, without expectation of reward.
