The name “Mac” McCoy in Chautauqua County has, for many years, been synonymous with senior advocacy. While growing up, Mac would spend quality time with the older members of his family. He would read the paper out loud to his grandfather who had poor vision and brought meals to him, brightening up his day with laughter. As an adult, he was tireless in his champion for the rights and proper care of the elderly of our County and then our State.
On November 11, 2008, Mac passed away. With his passing, a voice representing local and state seniors was silenced. However, he will forever be remembered through the Mac McCoy Office of the Aging Memorial Fund established at the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation. This endowment fund is to benefit the charitable mission of the Chautauqua County Office for the Aging “…to provide information and services to seniors and their families to promote independence, optimal health and wellness in a safe and secure environment.” The fund is to be used annually to enhance and expand services to help those seniors most at risk for losing their independence or in need in our community
While the Director of the Office for the Aging, Mac initiated several programs on behalf of the seniors of our County. He had the unique ability of knowing the day-to-day stress individuals experience while caring for a senior friend or family member. As a result, he established the Caregiver Support Program which offers in home visits, counseling and resource materials for caregivers of the elderly.
To accommodate those seniors with disabilities and their families, Mac created the Developmental Disabilities Program. This program offers ongoing case management services, referrals and follow-up contacts for older adults who have physical, mental or emotional disabilities. Seniors who have adult children with disabilities may also access this program.
Mac had known for years that seniors were vulnerable to elder abuse. Every year, an estimated 2.1 million older Americans are victims of physical, psychological, or other forms of abuse and neglect. He did not become actively involved in addressing this “hidden” and complex problem, however, until his own grandmother fell victim to abuse. As a result, Mac prevailed upon the County Legislature and was successful in securing funds to establish the Elder Abuse Prevention Program for the more than 30,000 older people of the County. Today, that program assists seniors at risk for or victims of abuse or neglect. It provides training, education and presentations to raise awareness. Trained caseworkers assess reported situations and arrange appropriate assistance.
The past, present and future senior citizens of Chautauqua County have much to be thankful for as a direct result of this one man’s efforts. Mac’s dedication and compassion for the older population of our County has made a difference in the lives of many of our senior citizens.
Mac’s birthday was this month. In his memory, the Foundation is presently accepting donations to the Mac McCoy Office of the Aging Memorial Fund.
