Deadline to Apply for Most Community Foundation Scholarships is Right around the Corner
Thursday, May 19, 2011

By Joel Keefer

It seems that everywhere you look there are stories about how the cost of attending college is skyrocketing. Whether it is the tuition or the books, the financial stress of college is real. That is why so many students come to the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation for help.

To many students, the Community Foundation is synonymous with the word scholarships. That would make sense, seeing that the Foundation awards over $800,000 in scholarship assistance each year to approximately 700 area students. Most of this scholarship assistance comes through the Foundation's general scholarship process, which is, once again, on the horizon. June 1st is the deadline to submit an online scholarship application.

The scholarship process is a great opportunity for any student because the only criteria necessary to apply is that you graduate from a Chautauqua County high school. There are no special tests to take, no auditions to complete, and no presentations to make.

All of the necessary instructions you need can be found on the Community Foundation's website at www.crcfonline.org. Additionally, you can view a timeline of the Foundation's overall scholarship process.

After your application has been submitted, the CRCF staff will begin a review process and, ultimately, present all applications to the scholarship committees in September through October. After the committees have reviewed the applications, through a completely anonymous process, awards will be recommended. All students are notified of the results in late November. Scholarship awards will be available in January for the spring/second semester.

If you haven't begun the process yet, visit www.crcfonline.org and look for the "Going to College" heading on the right-hand side of the page. Click on the link, and follow the steps as indicated from there. All applications must be submitted to the Community Foundation by June 1st. Applicants will be given friendly reminders of important dates and deadlines via emails and text-messages.

The Community Foundation is committed to assisting local students achieve their higher education goals, and hopefully following graduation, those student will decide to live, work, and play in the Chautauqua Region.

If an applicant needs any further assistance, they should contact the Community Foundation's Program Officer, Lisa Lynde, at (716) 661-3394 or email her at llynde@crcfonline.org. Information about the Community Foundation can also be found on Facebook at www.facebook.com/crcfonline.
