Chautauqua Region Community Foundation Supports Diabetes Education
Wednesday, June 01, 2011

Currently, one in ten Americans has Type 2 diabetes. Unfortunately, if new cases develop as projected, its prevalence could double or triple over the next forty years. In the United States, one in three people will have Type 2 diabetes by 2050 if current trends continue. These projections highlight the need for interventions to keep the number of new cases from climbing.

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes, and is triggered by a combination of unchangeable factors, such as family history and race, and controllable factors, such as obesity and inactivity.

It's a fact that most of us drastically underestimate how much food we eat. One of the main reasons is that we really don't know what's in the food we eat day-in and day-out. WCA Hospital has found this to be particularly true for the diabetes patients they serve. That is why it is so important that they continue to educate diabetes patients and make it more convenient for them to comprehend the impact of their eating habits.

The WCA Hospital Diabetes Self-Management Program offers individual and group education services from initial consultation to follow-up teaching and guidance. The program helps clients develop a healthy lifestyle through exercise, weight management, and medication therapy.

Compiled by Allan Borushek, a dietitian and health educator with over thirty years of clinical experience, and recommended by diabetes educators from across the nation, The CalorieKing Calorie, Fat and Carbohydrate Counter is a colorful, pocket-sized resource which:

•           Is the most up-to-date book of food counts available
•           Has 17,000 food listings including unique food data not available elsewhere
•           Includes 200 fast-food chains and restaurants
•           Is rated #1 by health professionals and consumers
•           Contains international foods, carnival foods and fair foods
•           Uses color coding to make it quick and easy to find what you're looking for

The CalorieKing Calorie, Fat and Carbohydrate Counter also contains a bounty of bonus content.

Through its Field of Interest Grants, the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation was able to help WCA Hospital’s Diabetes Self-Management Program with the purchase of several copies of the 2011 edition of the book.

Field of Interest grants are established by donors who want the funds to be targeted for needs that are important to them.
