There just aren’t enough people like John D. Hamilton. If there were, there would be more beauty, more human kindness, more education, and more tolerance….more of the things that last forever.” (Our Hometown, published 1994). Today we honor such a man, Allen Short. Like Hamilton, his affect on the community has been without limit.

  • Volunteer for the Jamestown division of the Chautauqua Fund since 1975 and served as Chairman for 5 years
  • Charter Director and former Chairman of Jamestown Community College Foundation

Mr. Short, who lives in Jamestown with his wife, Elaine, is the father of Pamela, Diane, Thomas, the late Catherine and stepfather to Jeffrey and Kevin Amann. Short, a partner in Short & Smith Insurance Associates, is a graduate of the Nichols School, Colgate University, and the Life Insurance Marketing Institute at Purdue University.   He served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II and began his career selling life insurance for Northwestern Mutual Group in 1952. Northwestern Mutual recognized Mr. Short’s dedication to his community by naming him a recipient of its community service award for outstanding volunteerism. This honor included a gift of $10,000 to the WCA Cancer Treatment Center. Today, we salute Allen Short as the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation’s 2010 John D. Hamilton Community Service Award recipient. Allen Short, an honorable gentleman who demonstrates dedication, leadership and support in furthering community spirit and …“more of the things that last forever”.
