The Dr. Albert B. Cecchini College Scholarship Fund, administered by the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation, presented its first award to Shelby Adams. Adams has been enthusiastically involved with the Jamestown YMCA since the age of five, participating in gymnastics, swimming, weight training, and many other activities. Currently finishing her first year at the University at Buffalo, she is majoring in Exercise Science, with plans to enter a pre-dental program. While acknowledging this award is a great help in deferring ever increasing college tuition costs, Adams stated, “It shows our community is very involved in helping future generations continue their education and we are being rewarded for our participation in local organizations, such as the YMCA.”
This scholarship is designed to assist a graduating high school senior from the Chautauqua region. Applicants must exemplify exceptional personal integrity, moral character, and a respectful, caring approach to life. Recipients must also be contributors to the community and involved in extracurricular activities.

Dr. Cecchini’s life was intricately woven into the fabric of the YMCA. As a small boy growing up in Warren, Pa., he spent many of his formative years participating in a variety of Y-sponsored programs. Moving to Jamestown, he eventually became a volunteer youth basketball coach, teaching the nuances of the sport, while offering guidance, support, and encouragement when it was most essential.
After his untimely death in 2013, his mother, Babette “Babs” Cecchini, established the scholarship in his memory. According to Mark Eckendorf, Jamestown Area YMCA CEO, being able to offer support to youth in need speaks to Dr. Cecchini’s character. He said, “I knew Al, and I know this is the way he would have wanted it.” Mrs. Cecchini firmly believes, “The door has been opened through the YMCA,” for her son’s memorial scholarship, carrying on his legacy of continuously giving back to the community.
