This time of year, scholarship opportunities are seemingly endless at the Community Foundation. Deadlines for most special scholarship applications have come and gone, but the big opportunity of them all is now on the horizon. June 1st is the deadline for the Community Foundation’s general scholarship application for high school seniors. So if you feel like you have missed out on a scholarship, there is still a month to go to take advantage of this very broad opportunity.
The general scholarship process for high school seniors is so broad because all students, as long as you are a high school senior in aChautauqua County school, can apply. There are no specific criteria that need to be met, and this scholarship process provides the greatest support in terms of numbers for area students. Just last year, the Community Foundation awarded over $600,000 through the general scholarship process. Perhaps even more impressive is the fact that 81% of the approximately 1,000 students that applied received scholarship assistance. Indeed, this process reaches out to a very large segment of the community’s student population.
To participate in the general high school scholarship process, a few simple steps need to take place. First, you need to obtain and complete a general scholarship application. One way to do so is to visit your high school guidance department. Your guidance counselor should be able to provide you with an application, ideas, and expertise in completing your application. Second, you need to obtain the college financial aid form. This form can also be picked up at your school’s guidance office. You will need to complete and submit the college financial aid form with your scholarship application. Third, your guidance counselor will be required to fill out portions of the application so make sure you give yourself enough time to get this accomplished.
Of course, if you prefer to acquire any of the necessary materials from the comfort of your home, simply access the Community Foundation’s website at www.crcfonline.org. Click on the “Scholarship” link once you are at the site, and all applications and forms can be downloaded right on your computer. Or you can always pick up the application and college financial aid form at the Foundation office at 418 Spring Street, Jamestown.
Once all submitted applications have been reviewed, sorted, and input into a special database by staff, all applications will be presented to the general scholarship committees. This happens in October. After the committees have reviewed the applications, through a completely anonymous process, awards will be decided. Students who have received an award will be made aware in November, and the award monies will be available for the spring semester at college.
With the weather warming and summer approaching it becomes more difficult to focus and remember deadlines. Yet, keep your eyes set on June 1st for the Community Foundation’s general high school scholarship deadline. If you have any questions regarding this process or on any of the steps needed to complete your application, call the Foundation staff at 661-3390. The Foundation staff can help you no matter what your need so do not be afraid to ask. The Foundation takes great pride in assisting area students, so let CRCF help you and apply for a scholarship!
