D’Angelo Family honors Sammy with Fund to Help JHS Soccer

The family of Samuel “Sammy” D’Angelo, Jr., a cherished former Jamestown resident and accomplished soccer player, has proudly announced the creation of the Sammy D’Angelo Memorial Fund. Established at the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation (CRCF), this fund celebrates his enduring legacy, particularly his profound love for soccer and the deep bonds he formed with his teammates and classmates.

The Sammy D’Angelo Memorial Fund will provide support to the Jamestown High School soccer program annually. This reflects Sammy’s lifelong dedication to the sport. His mother, Donna D’Angelo, shared, “Soccer was everything to Sammy. He started playing at just four years old. We want to make sure others who share the same enthusiasm for the sport will have the resources they need to continue celebrating the game the way he did.” 

Sammy was a Jamestown High School graduate of the class of 1996 and served as president of his class. While he also played baseball and basketball, soccer was his greatest passion. While he earned accolades like Division 1 Most Valuable Player, it was even more meaningful that he was named Team Captain. Sammy received a soccer scholarship, and pursued sports management at SUNY Oneonta and the University of South Carolina. He excelled academically, professionally, socially, and athletically. 

After college, Sammy continued to play in adult leagues, never losing his connection to the game he loved. Beyond his athletic prowess, Sammy was known for his infectious smile and his remarkable ability to bring joy to those around him, treating friends and teammates alike as family. He was the quintessential team player. Through this Fund, his passion will continue to empower future generations of local athletes.

“It is an honor to work with the D’Angelo family on this Fund to share Sammy’s passion for soccer with future generations of JHS athletes,” added Tory Irgang, Executive Director. “We hope this will bring positive impact and healing for those who knew and loved him.”
