Axel W. Carlson Recipient
Victoria Rater, of Sherman, was recognized by the Community Foundation as the winner of the seventh annual Axel W. Carlson Award for unselfish community service without thought for recognition or gain.
The award was presented by Chautauqua County Executive Andrew W. Goodell. Included was a $1,000 check that Victoria turned over to the Sherman Rebuilding Committee which she was instrumental in organizing.
It was she who brought together a group of Sherman people who worked toward improving the Main Street image, providing wholesome activities for townspeople and their children, searching out new businesses and developing a plan for the future improvement of the quality of life in Sherman.
As one fellow Sherman resident put it: “Without Vicky Rater’s drive and community pride, none of these projects would have gotten off the ground.”
